Traumatic Day

It’s the first day of work after a long holiday break and first thing I noticed when I turned on my PC in the office is my files are nowhere to be found.

ALL of my more than a YEAR worth of projects and web design FILES, GONE!

A bit of a flashback, before the holiday break, we were asked by our management on who wanted to have their PCs reformatted over the holiday break. For those who wanted that option, they are to place all their files in one folder then post the folder name in our internal project basecamp to inform the admin and make appropriate backup of the files. I did what was said and I labeled it as something like this:

C:\My Documents\MY PROJECTS ~ Jasmine (Not my actual name)

Unfortunately, the admin thought that the ’tilde’ (~) sign I placed was signifying me placing a signature after my post

So the backup made was only for ‘C:\My Documents\MY PROJECTS’ folder. The ‘C:\My Documents\MY PROJECTS ~ Jasmine’ folder was totally ignored.

I literally didn’t feel like talking to anyone in the office earlier but I refused to let my first working day for the New Year go down in the dumps. I was given hope when a fellow designer said there maybe a chance to recover the files (even after the reformat) with a DOS procedure. He said he saw it done from his OJT stint in an IT industry before.

So our overall project-manager, our temporary IT man, and my boss coordinated to try and get my files back. I wanted to help and research about it but I just felt so low I couldn’t make my brain function.

That meant I am unable to use my PC for the whole day. Good thing that not everyone was in and no critical project needed to be done. At least I was able to use other computer but it was really not comfortable using another computer without your softwares and plugins.

Now that I’m quite mellowed down from the experience I just made a short research on ‘Retrieving files after a reformat.’

All is not lost but it will cost you to recover the data. You can try using Google to search for file recovery utilities or contact a professional service if the data is valuable enough that you want to make sure its recovered.

I wish by tomorrow, when I open my PC, my files will be back. I will update you guys tomorrow.

Please wish me luck.
