Last night, I was mesmerized by a story from a Discovery Channel about a haunted hotel in the midst of a beautiful forest in England. Guests checking in would report of uncanny experiences of hearing knocks at the middle of night and find no one there, hearing hums in the ballroom when everyone is asleep, seeing ghostly apparitions walking one after another, elevators opening on their own, seeing a white figure looking down to the lobby from a balcony in broad daylight, etc. Typical ghostly memoirs if you ask me.
What settled this afar from other ghost stories I’ve heard is the theory of these two entities, a husband and a wife, who loved each other dearly, trying to find each other from the afterlife but always missing the other. They seem to sought each other all this time in hopes that one day they would meet again. This too, is what guests of the hotel wish for the loving couple.
Their story started with the husband building the hotel of his dreams and the wife being the perfect, sophisticated hostess of the elite society of their time. The wife would spend her days managing the hotel, preparing everything under her expertise, making sure everything is in order. During evenings, no matter who the elite guests are, she always comes out as the most beautiful, best dressed and poised individual in the congretation. She does this by taking a vigil at a high balcony overlooking the grand staircase at the lobby, wherein she would be able to take note of who and how the guests would look like for the evening. Finished taking notes, she would selectively choose from her wardrobe clothes and accessories to stand out then make her grand entrance. At the end of evening, she would have a quiet, simple dinner with her dear husband and before retiring, they would dance in the lobby, humming tunes from their hearts.
Unfortunately, the husband died from a heart condition due to working too much. The wife, though heartbroken, continued living by doing what she did best, managing the hotel, where she spent the best days of her life and love. When she died, the elite society thought they had lost their angel… or so they thought.
I wasn’t scared when I watched this. I grew sad and wishful, wishing the couple would find each other soon and move on to a better place. It’s not that I want them gone but I think it would ease their pain a lot.
