The Power of Words

While I had my lunch with my boss yesterday, I mentioned some slogans I came up for t-shirts I plan to design. Most are quirky and naughty and my boss smilingly mentioned an article he read a long time ago.

It was stated in the article that words hold such power, humans are not aware how often they are misused. It isn’t humans are gramattically stupid, since we have scholars and geniuses to go against that. The article focuses on using the correct words to avoid certain tragedies in our society.

Example, take anti-war organizations. Despite any laws and constitutions created to avoid any conflicts, local or otherwise, there is a never-ending stream of arguments all over the world, resulting to human sufferings and sometimes, mass destruction.

The reason behind word usage is because of the word ‘war’, even if the word ‘anti’ is connected to it. You may think, what’s the connection?

I’m not sure myself. But as I think about it, there are phrases like Pro Peace right? I think it’s the word ‘war’ that is given more emphasis despite the ‘anti-war’ terminology. And that is what perceived to be a powerful force behind world conflicts. Seeing the word ‘war’ testifies its ongoing growth in the society.

Another example, March is fire prevention month. Yet, there are daily news on fires across the metropolis, with hundreds loosing their homes. Others loosing a loved one. Others, their dreams. Is it truly ‘Fire Prevention Month”? The otherwise happens @_@

As for the usual thing we see almost everyday, the “traffic enforcer”. Taking the phrase literally, it tells of someone enforcing traffic. Is this the reason behind the heavy, HEAVY traffic here? LOL

Oh well, this is something to think about. The Power of Words. ^_^
