Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix. BIIIIIIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

I felt a bit of apprehensive when Licorne and I were sitting at the theater’s lobby, waiting for people to file out before we enter for the next Harry Potter screening. People filing out weren’t hyped about it. There were no loud comments or exclamations of joy or anything. It was a quiet exit of movie-goers. More surprisingly, there were not much people in the people. Yet, this IS Harry Potter, one of the most awaited movie of the year. We thought that maybe people went to the premier night instead so we just sat back, played with our PDA’s while waiting and munched on a lot of snacks.

Sheeesh! I didn’t expect the movie to fail so much from my expectations. And this is coming from someone who has not even read a single book of Harry Potter. So my view and perspective on it is purely from a movie-goer’s POV.

One thing that I noticed is somehow, the whole movie lacked that certain Harry Potter magic. I knew there were great CG effects, the great soundtracks, the same beloved characters, etc. Still, there were no lingering moments to remember afterwards the movie and I believe that is what made previous Harry Potter movies so great. They leave something behind such as a moral, a scene, a line, an emotion etc., something to talk about after exiting the theater. There was only one magical Harry Potter moment I recognized and that was at the start of the movie when Harry was exported by members of the Order of The Phoenix towards their headquarters. They flew all over London, through brightly lit buildings, bridges etc. There was magic and a signal stating, the movie is starting, ‘let the adventure begin!’

I felt as if the characters, except for Harry of course, weren’t given enough exposure or should I say, ‘evolution or growth’ within the story. I always loved Hermione with her brain saving the day, and of Ron always providing a comedy output in times of need. It’s a good thing the Weasley twins were there with their usual mischief but somehow I felt their characters are stifled and can’t do much chaos as what is expected from them. Professor Dumbledore didn’t have the exposure to clearly explain or at least give emphasis to his role as someone with the knowledge and power to protect and defeat ‘Him-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named’. Also, I’m missing the bratty Malfloy (imagine that!), he only has very little exposure.

A lot of things weren’t explained to me. Such as what happened to Dumbledore after the escaped the Ministry’s capture of him. Or, what happened to Dolores when she was captured by the Centaurs. And Hagrid, I’m missing the big guy, where did he go after he introduced his half-brother to Harry and his friends? What happened to the giant afterwards? So many things left unanswered. T____T

I can understand the story. I get what the movie is trying to say. Still, it was as if I was forcing myself to follow the sequence of events rather than be pulled and be involved in it. I missed that or was I expecting too much?

Gaaaah! I just hope the next Harry Potter movie would not disappoint me as much.
