The Rain Predicament

Everyone knows I’m not much into the rainy season. It does have its perks such as snuggling under the bed covers or reading a good book with hot choco within easy reach. The gloomy solemn, atmosphere does emit a comfortable mood of relaxation. It is a good though… if given the right environment.

Unfortunately in my case, I find it hard to enjoy a relaxing rainy day in the house. Even more so if I am outside since it would mean I would be working or have errands. The idea doesn’t exactly suit a tranquil scene when you are getting wet and splashed over by water from moving vehicles. It sucks big time to be a commuter.

I happen to live in my parents’ house and it is a very old house. It stands proudly for more than 50 years and within all the renovations that happened among the generations that lived in it, the old structure has its moments of giving into old age. Holes suddenly get formed on the roof, flood happens (a lot of times already) at the back part of the house because of its lower flooring compared to the rest of the residence, the small back garden gets really muddy, slippery and wet, the laundry area becoming totally useless, etc. When it starts to rain, my mind takes on automatic mode on what needs to be done as remedy to the house problems. Where will I hang the wet laundry? Where are the small pails to place under the dripping roof? Will there be flood at the back of the house? Where are the flashlights and candles in case there are will be a blackout? Even when it’s already evening, when I hear the torrent outside, I can’t easily go to sleep from thinking of all the problems which may arise from the rain.

So yes, I don’t get relaxed within this environment. It’s even worse when you are a commuter and you get splashed over by cars. I’m sure most drivers don’t mean it but the effect is just the same. It’s very hard for commuters to get by especially when there is a storm and everyone is scrambling for cover within office buildings or is having a marathon to the next public vehicle they see. Worse is when they have to squeeze their butt into very small space since the public vehicle because it’s already full but they take on the suffering to get home early.

Imagine that. You are wet, tired and groggy from the weather.

So I absolutely hate it when people with cars complain about the traffic, their gas bills and parking spaces. If they don’t want to pay high gas prices or have a hard time finding parking space then how about commuting eh? Maybe then they would find the comfort of seating next to wet people comfortable and smelling au natural body scents absolutely divine compared to their private air-conditioned vehicles.

I remember having college classmate who came to school in cars and having their own drivers. There was a storm and we were all waiting for the college to announce suspension of classes. A lot were complaining about waking up early, coming to school and being totally annoyed by the hassle of going back home. I didn’t see what they should be complaining when I was wet from the rain I had to change into our P.E. uniform, I was shivering from the cold and I had to brave the rain again once we were sent home. No, I didn’t hate those classmates but I do get internally pissed by how they don’t get to experience what others have to suffer from… and yet they complain a lot. Life isn’t fair.
